Howells – expert legal advice for individuals

Mental health

If you have mental health problems and are finding it difficult to get the support you need – or if you care for a family member or friend with mental health problems and need access to services on their behalf – our specialist mental health team can help.

Mental health law is complex and more people than ever are being affected by mental illness. Many of those sufferers will experience discrimination and inadequate support from agencies and organisations.

If you are detained under the Mental Health Act, you may have the right to make representations at a tribunal and we have the expertise to be able to support you and act as advocate on your behalf. We can also attend hospital managers’ meetings with you.

If there are other areas of your life which are affected by your illness, we can refer you to our other specialist departments for help with benefits or your care needs. We can also come and visit you in hospital if you are not able to come to us.

If you are in prison and believe you may be transferred to a mental hospital, or are already in a mental hospital following arrest, we can advise you of your rights under the Human Rights Act.
