Since the Human Rights Act came into force in 2000, UK law has been brought in line with European law, meaning that UK citizens now benefit from additional protection around their basic human rights, such as the right to life, liberty, privacy, freedom of expression and a fair trial.

Howells has a long-standing reputation in the field of human rights and our expert team, led by leading Human Rights lawyer Peter Mahy, has taken on – and won – many high profile cases including, most recently, a groundbreaking victory in the European Court of Human Rights which declared that it was unlawful for South Yorkshire Police to retain DNA and other samples from innocent people.
