Criminal Defence

Howells LLP has the largest criminal department in the Yorkshire and Humber region, and one of the largest in the entire UK.

We have 30 specialist staff and cover the entire range of criminal defence work, including white collar crime, large scale drug imports and homicides - dealing with ten such cases in the last year alone.

The firm is well known for its expertise in youth crime, public order law and cases with a civil liberties or human rights dimension.

The department is led by Danny Simpson, recognised as a leading criminal defence lawyer, and the team works closely with colleagues in our civil liberties department, undertaking work on miscarriages of justice, prison law and judicial review work.

Recently, we have expanded to develop a fully-fledged Crown Court department, and have two higher rights advocates, meaning we can represent clients at the highest level and in the most serious cases.
