Howells – expert legal advice for individuals

Civil Partnerships

From a legal perspective, the Civil Partnership Act, which came into force in December 2005, effectively introduced gay marriage. Same sex couples choosing to formalise their relationship through a civil partnership now largely have the same rights and responsibilities as a married couple.

Although there are some differences - for example, in the areas of pension rights and immigration – the civil partnership is like marriage in all but name. The Act also introduced changes, particularly in terms of tax and benefits, which apply to cohabiting same sex couples who decide not to opt for a civil partnership.

If you are considering entering into a civil partnership – or are in a civil partnership which you want to dissolve - our legal experts can give you the best advice on what to do next and how the choices you make could affect your legal and financial situation.
